The u-bass has got to be the definitive travel instrument for bass players, but it also sounds great as a serious instrument. My son would probably give this bass 4 stars, but that's only because nothing on this planet ever rises above 7 or 8 out of 10 in his esteem, so that translates to 5 stars in my book. 2 people found this helpful

For learning it’s great as I don’t need to stretch fingers as far, The U Bass is well made solid yet light, mine came with wire wound string as opposed to the usual Rubber type. I first played the Kala U-Bass at Bass Player Live a few years ago, and my first impression was that it was a toy or a gimmick, but after I played one for a while I changed my tune. This is a fun and easy to play instrument that also happens to sound very good. The Kala Scout U-Bass is a Mahogany Acoustic Electric Bass Ukulele that looks and sounds amazing. Whether you get the fretted or fretless bass version of the U-Bass, you will have a solid instrument on your hands. I play Kala ubasses, and have been doing that from the start, but there are of course other options out there now.

The round wounds produce a tone that will remind you of a P-Bass and the model that was presented was the UBASS-JYMN-BK-FS. Kala U-Bass I'd heard one of these played in a crowd at a local festival, and had to add one to my menagerie. It's beautiful, extremely well engineered, and overall an XLNT modern instrument. The day after I received it, I played it in a gig (amplified) with a jazz band.
